Inspired by our love of adventure sports, the natural world and our passion to protect the planet, Amber Nuttall and Alistair Gosling supported by EXTREME International established The Extreme Hangout as a climate action events platform in 2021 with the vision to give young changemakers a voice, popularise the climate movement and inspire environmental action.
Young and underrepresented communities want their voices heard and had little opportunity to participate in formal proceedings. EXTREME made it its mission to give them a seat at the table, deliver a platform where they could share their concerns and opinions.
We made a spectacular debut at COP26 in Glasgow, quickly establishing ourselves as a prominent fringe event. Located aboard a repurposed ferry on the River Clyde, in close proximity to the main proceedings, we hosted an extensive 11-day youth conference and hub. Our impressive lineup featured 200 renowned speakers, including the likes of Bear Grylls and Lily Cole, attracting 6,000 enthusiastic visitors and generating an astounding 5 million video impressions. We delivered alongside The New York Times at COP27 in Egypt and then in recognition of our growing movement and community, the United Nations COP28 organising committee invited us to deliver Extreme Hangout in the official COP28 Green Zone at Expo City, Dubai in 2023.
To date, there have been 17 Extreme Hangout Events across Europe, Middle East, Africa, North and South America with over 800 prestigious speakers delivering over 8 million video views and over 60% female voices gracing our stage.
Since that groundbreaking launch and with an ambitious goal to host 50 impact events in 50 locations over the 3 years we have expanded our reach through successful collaborations with local partners and have already executed 17 innovative local Extreme Hangouts. With many more in the pipeline, our journey is one of growth, innovation, and lasting change.
We are currently preparing for The Extreme Hangout at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, potentially from 11th - 22nd November and London climate week from 22nd - 30th June as well as Extreme Hangout Cascais, Portugal already pencilled in for its second edition from 11th- 14th July 2024. Watch this space for continued updates.

WHAT IS COP?
For the past 27 years the United Nations has brought together almost every country on earth for global climate summits, called COPs (Conference of the Parties). In the time since the first ever COP in Berlin in 1995, climate change has transformed from being a fringe issue to a global crisis.

The 29th COP will be hosted by Azerbaijan in Baku. With an expected attendance of over 80,000 delegates, including 140 heads of state and government and over 5000 media professionals, COP29 carries high expectations to drive vital and urgent action for the future of our planet.
